犯人の設定で議論を呼んだと有名な作品。あんまり有名なので、よく平気でネタバレされている。私も、いきなり小学館の学習雑誌の名探偵特集か何かで、
「名探偵エルキュール・ポアロの代表作『アクロイド殺人事件』の犯人はなんと×××なのだ。君も読んでみよう」とか(原文では×××は伏せ字じゃなかった)書かれているのを見てしまい、読む気が消滅した。
それは確かに、ミステリの価値は犯人の設定やトリックのオリジナリティばかりではない。だからこそ、一度読んでいて犯人もトリックもわかっていても再読できるミステリも多い。だからといって、せっかく作者が用意してくれたサプライズを味わうチャンスを最初から奪われるのは、ひどく、悲しい(泣)。
そういえば、同じ作者の「オリエント急行殺人事件」や、エラリー・クイーンの悲劇4部作の結末も、実際に読む前にネタバレされてしまっていたはずだ。こういうのは犯罪行為じゃないかと思ってしまうよ……。
この「アクロイド殺し」は、犯人の設定ネタが作品の大方を支配していて、それ以外の面白みは若干薄いかもしれない。けれど、それはたぶんはネタがこれである以上仕方のないことなのだろう。
ただし、「アクロイドを殺したのはだれか」を読んでから再読すると、また少し楽しみかたが変わりもするのだ。(oppe)
