  • ヤングチャンピオン誌上で、「ウルフガイ」の連載が始まった。
    　「ウルフガイ」というのは、ＳＦ作家平井和正の代表作の1つで、狼人間・犬神明を主人公にした活劇小説のこと。
    　かなり人気のあるシリーズで、これまでにも何度となく、いろいろな形でコミカライズされてきている。
    　ウルフガイ・シリーズには実は大まかに分けて２系列ある。
    　三十代のアダルト犬神明を主人公とし、一人称「おれ」で語られるアダルト・ウルフガイ・シリーズ。
    　もうひとつ、中学生の少年犬神明からスタートする三人称のウルフガイ・シリーズ(こちらは、特に名称に確固としたものがなくて、無印で単にウルフガイ・シリーズと呼ばれたり、アダルト・シリーズとの区別のためにヤング・ウルフガイ・シリーズとか、少年ウルフガイ・シリーズとか呼ばれたりはしている。)
    　今回コミカライズされるのは、この後者の少年犬神明のシリーズになる。
    　これまで、少年犬神明のコミカライズや、或いはイラスト等を手がけてきたマンガ家には、坂口尚、鈴宮和由、大橋薫、高橋留美子がいたはずで、ただし、坂口尚を除いては番外編やパロディ、イラストに留まっている。高橋留美子のウルフガイなど一番ワクワクできそうだったのだが、とうとう幾葉かのイラストのみで終わってしまったのが残念だ。
    　今回のコミカライズは、２０年ばかり平井作品のイラストの専従として活躍してきた泉谷あゆみが、念願のという形で連載することになっている。泉谷あゆみは以前にも、「地球樹の女神」シリーズの番外編を「クリスタル・チャイルド」というコミックにして刊行していたが、連載という形でマンガを発表するのは初めてのはずだから、何を隠そうメジャーデビューみたいなものだ。
    　力量の点でおぼつかないと思われたのか、シナリオを田畑由秋、作監を余湖裕輝が担当しているようだ。田畑由秋と余湖裕輝はこれまでにも「アクメツ」全18巻、「コミックマスターＪ」全13巻でコンビを組んできたらしい。「アクメツ」については少年チャンピオン誌上でパラパラ見たことがあるが、「コミックマスターＪ」についてはまるで知らないのでなんとも言えない。ヤングキングに連載されていたらしい。
    　余湖裕輝と言えば余湖ゆうきの名前で、やはり平井和正の「バチガミ」をコミカライズしていたのを覚えている。余湖裕輝にとってもこの平井和正のコミカライズがメジャーデビュー作だったと思うから、今回の泉谷あゆみの連載開始にはいろいろ思うところもあるのではないか。
    　第１回で、平井和正ファンサイトではかなりの好評をもって迎えられているし、原作者本人も肯定的なコメントを書いている。個人的には、いったいこれがヤングチャンピオンの読者層に面白いのかどうか、よく分からない。
    　ヒロイン、青鹿晶子のキャラクターは原作とも、これまでのコミカライズとも大きく変わっている感じで、これが旧来からの原作ファンには不評ではと思ったのだが、そんなことはないようだ。また、原作では不良少年にたかられ、単にナイフを腹に深々と刺されるだけだった(単に…だけ、は副詞の呼応である。かもしれない)犬神明が、いきなり大量の不良少年グループとの大乱戦の末に車に跳ね飛ばされ盛大に血しぶきを噴出した挙げ句、熊とも見紛う狼の姿に変身するのも、少年マンガ(青年かな？)なのだから仕方ないのだろうくらいの感想を持った。第１回として、はたして掴みは成功しているのだろうか。
    　ただ、登場時の犬神明がどうにもただの不逞な暴力少年にしか見えないのは……。ごろごろとそこらにある、不良少年マンガの登場人物と変わるところがない印象だったのだ。
    　まあ、まだ第１回目だし、長い目で見守ることにしよう。泉谷あゆみには２０年前ちょっぴり遭遇もしたし(まだ子どもで、ソファの上で猫みたいに「むにゅー」と伸びをしていた)。(おっぺ)
  • ヤングチャンピオン連載がスタートした、泉谷あゆみ作画での「ウルフガイ」。
    第2回では、犬神明が博徳学園にいよいよ転校してきて(なぜか私立ではなく、市立になっている。そして、どうもそれは誤記ではないのだ……なぜか？)、青鹿晶子と再会、小沼竜子と遭遇、黒板に名前を書いているところでナイフが飛んでくる……辺りまでなのだが、このコミック版、つくづく犬神明の内心の声の描写が多い。
    それも、青鹿晶子の描写と同様コミカルなタッチになっているものだから、犬神明の外見の造形も伴って……
    これは、「狼の紋章」というより、「悪徳学園」……いや、もともとの原作たる小説版「ウルフガイ」、「狼男だよ」や「悪徳学園」と同じく一人称「おれ」で書かれていたバージョンが現出してきているのではないのか？
    少なくとも登場の時点からしばらくの間、「狼の紋章」という三人称版ウルフガイでも、犬神明のキャラクターは実は「狼男だよ」「悪徳学園」の彼とそんなに大差はなかったのではないか、とずっと思ってはいた。それが、原作小説が三人称という形に落ちついていくにつれ、それこそ言霊的な力が働いて、それまでの犬神明とは違う新しい少年犬神明が誕生していったのではないか……
    今回のコミック版は、意図してか知らずかはどうあれ、神経症的に引き籠もっていくしかなくなった少年犬神明にまた別のルートを用意していくのではないか。それはたとえば、語り直されたカミーユ・ビダンが崩壊を免れたのと同じように。
    もちろん、原作者平井和正の意志を無視してはそれは不可能なことではあるのだろうが……(おっぺ)
  • ウルフガイ　第３回
    いやー、読めば読むほど「狼の紋章」というより「悪徳学園」な気のする少年犬神明のキャラクターなのだが、今回の眼目は「クロ」。
    どこでだったか、伊藤典夫が「あそこはスゴイ！」と言っていた、「クロの変貌」場面。
    いじめられっ子の弱気な少年……のように出てきたクロの「がらりと変わる」、その瞬間のホラーであるような寒気……は残念ながら表現しきれてはいなかったようだ。変貌前の部分にもう少し筆を裂いてあれば違ったんだろうな。
    で、それより何より……この段階でクロがスッコロンデ自傷してしまっていいのか？　こうなると、木村紀子の出番は？　で、木村紀子の出番がないということは……「つらいよ、母さん。つらすぎるよ」は？
    いや、今の「悪徳学園」版少年犬神明のキャラクターなら、もちろんこの母へのセリフなど存在できようはずはないのだ。このキャラがこんなセリフを言ってどうする？
    どう見ても、センシティブな魅力で特に女性読者を魅了した「狼の紋章」にはならないような気はするなあ。まあ、掲載媒体が掲載媒体だから当然かな。(おっぺ)
