The fight has sold out in the capacity 22,000 arena and will be shown in the UK on Sky Box Office pay-per-view. May 10, 2005 - Mark Burnett Productions, producer of The Contender, and Yahoo will produce a live boxing show exclusively available to online viewers, according to Ad Age. At least one bout will be aired online at Yahoo! featuring eliminated contestants from The Contender reality TV show. A promotion will drive viewers to Yahoo.com to vote for six boxers who did not qualify to compete for the $1 million purse on the TV show final. These six, plus the two semifinal losers, will fight in four actual professional matchs at Ceasar's Palace May 24 at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. EST. The finals will air live on NBC later on the same day.

Lyakhovich to face Wladimir
HOUSTON, TX-- According to Kenny Weldon, trainer of Heavyweight prospect Sergei Lyakhovich, an agreement has been reached to face Wladimir Klitschko in the US. An exact date and venue has not been decided as of yet, but Weldon said he will travel with Lyakhovich to Scotsdale, Az., on Sunday to begin training. The following press release has been issued by representatives of WBA Heavyweight Champion James Toney regarding the rumor storm brewing that he has tested positive for banned substances after defeated former champion John Ruiz on April 30.

VAN NUYS, Calif. (May 11, 2005) James Toney has fought many fights in his career, but the one apparently facing him now is one that disturbs and revolts him like no other opponent could ever do. ＆quotBeing accused of taking performance enchancing substances is an insult to me. I don't do drugs period,＆quot Toney stated. ＆quotI've never used any illegal substances to prepare myself for a fight.＆quot Toney's body doesn't reflect a fighter taking mass muscle substances, nor would anyone in their right mind be taking any banned substances, while knowingly and willingly giving urine samples. Toney's weight loss was substantial from the day the fight was announced to the event, totally inconsistent with the signs of an athlete using substances to add muscle mass. ＆quotToney received medical treatment for recovery from his biceps and triceps surgery last year. His doctor has stated that the combination of medications used to control the inflammation and tissue growth caused the positive test result,＆quot stated Dan Goossen, Toney's promoter. ＆quotThis is further supported, since the body, in combination with the medications, naturally create the form of substance (＆quotNandrolone＆quot) reflected in the test results.＆quot Goossen further stated, ＆quotIt would be unjust for the sport to reprimand a fighter who was under a doctor's care and direction many months before in healing a career threatening injury.＆quot

TONEY SUSPENDED; FINED!

According to the Fight Fax web site’s suspension list, James “Lights Out” Toney has been suspended for 90 days and fined $10,000 for testing positive for a banned substance. In addition, and perhaps more importantly, his April 30 WBA title-winning victory over John Ruiz has been changed to a No Decision. While the implications of this decision are not known, the most likely scenario will see the title returned to Ruiz outright. Toney will apparently be re-tested after his 90-day suspension is served. Hall Of Famer and world famous fight broadcaster Colonel Bob Sheridan was in New York when James Toney outpointed John Ruiz to win the WBA heavyweight crown. The Colonel was unhappy with Toney testing positive for steroids and said. ＆quotI was in New York for Ruiz-Toney and it looks like Toney will be stripped of the title for illegal substance during the fight and I'm glad. Boxing doesn't need this drug problem that is running rampant in other sports. I've always said we have the cleanest sport of all but the public doesn't realize it. I'm very proud of the WBA for jumping right on this situation.＆quot The Colonel has called the greatest heavyweight battles of all time including the ＆quotThrilla In Manila＆quot Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier and the ＆quotRumble In The Jungle＆quot Muhammad Ali vs George Foreman. WBC to review Corrales-Castillo!
Citing ＆quotfuror＆quot about the Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo clash, the WBC is naming a committee to review the fight. A WBC press release states, ＆quotThere have been many protests from most of the press in Mexico and Latin America, as well as the Federal Boxing Commission in regards to the performance of the referee, who, among other things, let approximately 40 seconds go from the moment of the second knockdown to the continuing of the action in the tenth round....The lightweight championship of the world was held under the trademark of the WBC, and is our obligation to respond to all matters that receive a request, and we think that there was something that was done wrong. It is our obligation to those who trust the WBC's impartiality, rules, and actions.＆quot

May 13, 2005 - WBA heavyweight titlist James Toney appeared on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights and, in a televised interview with Brian Kenney, indicated that he would not appeal the failed drug test that transformed his April 30, 2005 victory over John Ruiz into a no-contest. Toney said the positive test result came from drugs that were prescribed to him by his physician and that he planned to serve his 90-day suspension and then resume his career. However, he almost certainly will be stripped of his WBA title, which will revert back to Ruiz. --Scott Shaffer

05/14/05 - RabbitPunchBoxing just learned today from sources very close to the situation that Oscar De la Hoya wants to fight Ike Quartey at 154 lbs. instead of Zab Judah this September or October if Quartey can win his June 18th fight against Verno Phillips. Sources indicate that De la Hoya feels Zab Judah has been too disrespectful to him to get such a big payday and considers Zab a distant 2nd possibility should De la Hoya vs Quartey II not materialize.
In their 1999 fight, Quartey lost a close split decision and then lost against Fernando Vargas 10 months later before retiring. Quartey recently came back and stopped Clint McNeil in Ghana in the 8th round.

One Punch inks Campbell!

One Punch Productions has announced the signing of IBF #9 ranked Jr. Lightweight Nate “the Galaxxy Warrior” Campbell (26-3-1, 22 KO’s) to a promotional contract. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Campbell, coming off an April 29 2nd round destruction of Johnny Walker, will have his first bout under the new agreement on July 15, as he headlines One Punch Productions next installment of its “Ballroom Brawl!” series at the Tampa Westshore Doubletree Hotel. One Punch will then be working to secure a date for a possible IBF #1 eliminator in Campbell’s hometown of Jacksonville, FL in August or September. “Nate wants to do his eliminator in his hometown” commented One Punch Productions Director Terry J. Trekas, “So we will do whatever we need to in order for that to happen. I’m extremely confident that Jacksonville will come out and support Nate in his quest to win the IBF Jr. Lightweight world title” said Trekas. WBA approves Harmon-Castro as an eliminator!

May 16, 2005 - The WBA has announced on its website that Derrick Harmon will travel to Argentina to face Jorge Castro in a light heavyweight elimination bout to be held on the WBA's Say No To Drugs show. That show is scheduled for May 26, 2005 in Buenos Aires' famous Luna Park. The WBA title is held by Fabrice Tiozzo of France. Castro, rated #12 in the Boxingtalk ratings has more wins than any active boxer. His record is 128-10-3. Harmon, Boxingtalk #25, has gone almost a year since his last fight, a split decision win over David Telesco. Though he hasn't done much lately, Harmon does list a 2002 decision win over current world light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson on his resume. Harmon replaces Lou Del Valle, who the WBA says demanded extra money after agreeing to the fight.

05/17/05 - As first reported by FightNews.com, it appears that Manny Pacquiao will be facing IBF Jr. Lightweight champ Robbie Peden this September, probably on the undercard of an Erik Morales card. No opponent has been named yet for Morales but should both win, they could meet in a rematch at the end of 2005. Their first fight was an all out war and was one of the most entertaining fights of the year with Erik Morales pulling off the upset victory. Robbie Peden won the vacant IBF title by beating Nate Campbell for the 2nd time this past February.

Ruiz officially regains WBA heavyweight strap

May 17, 2005 - James Toney has been officially stripped of his title and John Ruiz is once again the WBA heavyweight champion of the world. Toney captured the title from Ruiz on April 30 by winning a unanimous decision, but post-fight drug tests revealed that Toney had performance-enhancing drugs in his system. Toney and Ruiz received copies of a letter addressed from WBA attorney Robert Mack to Toney stating, ＆quotbased on the actions of the New York State Athletic Commission and the test results on which the commission relied, the WBA must vacate your championship ranking and reinstate John Ruiz as the champion.＆quot Boxingtalk will also acknowledge Toney's positive test results by restoring Ruiz and Toney to their pre-fight positions in the Boxingtalk ratings. Ruiz will be returned to the #3 position and Toney to #4 so that
Toney's rating does not benefit from the illegal drugs in his system. Hopkins first will meet Jermain Taylor (23-0, 17 KOs) on July 16 in Las Vegas. Then he said he would like to ＆quotcall it quits'' by fighting the winner of the June 18 light-heavyweight rematch between Glen Johnson (42-9-2, 28 KOs) and Antonio Tarver (22-3, 18 KOs).
Hopkins ( 46-2-1, 32 KOs) says Team Trinidad made a mistake by not proceeding to an immediate rematch with him following his Sept. 29, 2001, 12th-round stoppage of the Puerto Rican superstar. They compounded that error upon Trinidad's return from retirement by taking bouts with Ricardo Mayorga, which he won, and Wright.
＆quotI softened up Trinidad real good for Winky or anybody else that can box a little bit,＆quot Hopkins said. ＆quotI opened the floodgates. It's like when guys started standing up to Mike Tyson. The intimidation factor was gone. Same thing here. Nobody's scared of Trinidad now.''

May 17, 2005 - Sharmba Mitchell has pulled out of a bout against Joshua Clottey that was scheduled for the Mike Tyson undercard in Washington D.C. on June 11, 2005. ＆quotJosh had already signed to fight Sharmba, but now I have been told that Sharmba wont sign the bout agreement,＆quot said Lou DiBella, Clottey's promoter. ＆quotI think this is about the quality of his opposition and Sharmba is chicken.＆quot Mitchell will remain on the card, making his welterweight debut against an opponent to be decided shortly. Clottey is rated #30 in the Boxingtalk ratings. However, he is 26-1 and his only loss was by disqualification to Carlos Baldomir in 1999. If, as DiBella maintains, that the disqualification was unmerited and that Clottey was on his way to a victory in that bout, then Clottey belongs at least in the top 15. Only yesterday, Clottey was interviewed on this site and promised to defeat Mitchell, saying, ＆quotI am pretty sure I will knock him out. He's coming up now to 147 pounds, so I have the power and energy more than him.＆quot Mitchell, whose last bout was a loss to world junior welterweight champion Kostya Tszyu, is a former world titlist and is currently rated #8 at 140 pounds by Boxingtalk

After WBA cruiserweight champ Jean-Marc Mormeck added the WBC belt to his waist, defeating Wayne Braithwaite in an exciting unification contest, the WBA promoted him to 'superchamp' status. That means the WBA will have a fight for its 'regular' title, with the superchamp Mormeck not immediately forced to take on a mandatory challenger. The WBA appointed former world champion Virgil Hill (49-5; 23 KOs) and unbeaten Russian contender Valery Brudov (30-0; 23 KOs) to square off for the vacant belt. French promoter Michel Acaries won the purse bids today and he told Fightnews.com that he plans to stage the fight in August at Saint Martin, on the Caribbean Antilles. Acaries participated to the bid process as the Russian-born Brudov is now a French-based athlete, whom Acaries signed to a promotional deal three years ago.

WBA middleweight champion Masilino Masoe (25-2) will have former WBA super middleweight champion Anthony Mundine (23-2) as a sparring partner during the next seven days according to Masoe's trainer Noel Thornberry. ＆quotMasoe is preparing to fight Felix Sturm in a WBA defense of the 160 pound belt and Mundine's style is very similar to the German boxer,＆quot said Thornberry. ＆quotI have several tapes on Sturm and they reveal him to be a very mobile boxer unlike the one who went very close to defeating Oscar De La Hoya in 2004. In that contest he took the fight to De La Hoya. Mundine explained to me it was a bonus getting the tough walk-up puncher Masoe as a sparring partner as he is similar in style to Mikkell Kessler (35-0) who Anthony will challenge on June 8 at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.＆quot Masoe won the WBA middleweight crown by scoring a second round stoppage over Evans Ashira in 2004. Mundine lost the WBA super middleweight crown to Manny Siaca in 2004. Siaca lost the title to Kessler in 2004 by knockout in eight rounds.

May 23, 2005 - Kelvin Davis suffered a torn bicep in the first round of his bout with Guillermo Jones in Chicago over the weekend, according to an attorney representing the cruiserweight. ＆quotHe had a nagging bicep problem for the past six months, and it popped in the first round,＆quot said attorney Mark Schopper. ＆quotIt prevented him from throwing his jab with any effectiveness.＆quot In his first bout since getting stripped of the IBF cruiserweight championship, Davis was hurt at the end of the third round and then stopped in the fourth by Panamanian contender Guillermo Jones. Schopper added that Davis is consulting with an orthopedist and surgery is likely, but the attorney is optimistic that Davis will be back at full strength sometime in the fall.

Fernando Vargas and Main Events have filed a request for immediate arbitration with Association of Boxing Commissions regarding the WBC's ranking of Ricardo Mayorga. On April 18, Fernando Vargas and Main Events filed a protest with the WBC over Mayorga's mandatory status arguing that Mayorga (having lost two of his last three bouts) is unworthy to be declared the mandatory challenger to WBC 154lb titlist Javier Castillejo, and that Castillejo should be allowed an optional defense against Vargas in August. It was also pointed out that Mayorga's only win in the last year was against a late sub after Mayorga irresponsibly failed to make weight for a 147lb title shot against then-WBA ＆quotregular＆quot welter titlist Jose Rivera. No response was received by Main Events from the WBC, however, yesterday WBC president Jose Sulaiman has sent a letter to Castillejo demanding that Castillejo agree to the terms offered by Don King for a Castillejo-Ricardo Mayorga bout by May 27, or face being stripped (no purse bid was ever ordered). May 25, 2005 - According to a DiBella Entertainment press release, Jose Navarro will return to the ring Thursday night (May 26) to battle Miguel Del Valle (8-11, 2 KO's). Navarro, 21-1, should be considered an uncrowned junior bantamweight champion in light of the horrible decision he received in a WBC title fight against Katsushige Kawashima in January. Navarro has already been declared the mandatory challenger for the winner of the upcoming July 18th bout between Kawashima and Masamori Tokuyama. Thursday's Navarro-Del Valle bout, scheduled for ten rounds takes place in San Antonio, Texas at the Airport Convention Center. Tickets are available at the San Antonio Airport Convention Center Box Office at (210) 804-6304. Tickets are reasonably priced at $50, $20 & $10. The box office opens at 4 pm, doors open at 6 pm and the first fight starts at 7 pm.

National Commission update!
A bill that would create a U.S. government agency to oversee professional boxing was reported (recommended) by a House subcommittee on Wednesday. The bill will now move on for consideration in the full U.S. House of Representatives. A similar bill was passed by the U.S. Senate on May 9. The bill would create a Federal Boxing Commission within the Department of Commerce that will be responsible for oversight of all professional boxing matches in the United States.
